It’s better to be a don’t-know-it-all
Fresh off the AdAge Small Agency Conference last week, I have rediscovered how much can be learned in this business every day. That’s what makes it exciting. That’s what keeps it exciting.
The world is shifting quicker than ever. Each day offers hundreds of micro-learning moments. And occasionally, someone may even shake the bedrock of something you’ve held true for years. Take it in, turn it over and be open to it.
An open mind lets in a lot of knowledge.
That does not mean regularly chuck everything you believe. After careful consideration, you must feel that the new theory or practice undeniably surpasses your current one. If so, adopt it. If not, stick.
Also, the next time someone asks if you’re familiar with X or ever heard of Y, instead of pretending you know it (we all do that), boldly and confidently say, “I don’t know, tell me all about it.” You’ll find that liberating and empowering.
Because the one thing we all know is that a know-it-all doesn’t know it all.
